Dear readers,

With the presentation of the findings of a joint project between the EU and China in the framework of the New Skills for New Jobs initiative, and the signing of the joint action plan for the next year's Europe-China Year of Youth, the past weeks have seen great advancements in EU-China cooperation. Elsewhere in the issue, youth health plays a major role as Youth Policy Watch reports upon a recent Eurobarometer's worrying insight into youth mental health, whilst the World Health Organisation calls out for health care that is more accessible to young people.

A Holistic Approach is Needed to Tackle Poverty in Europe

For the 18th year running, the 17th October 2010 saw the global community stand together for the UN's International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Importantly, participation of the poor themselves has been at the center of the day's celebration since its very beginning, in order to reflect the willingness of people living in poverty to use their expertise to contribute to the eradication of poverty.

Striving to make Healthcare more Accessible to Young Europeans

The World Health Organization has published a report that presents experiences of how health systems in the WHO's European Member States respond to the challenge of meeting the health and developmental needs of young people. The report begins by summarising the recent meeting on youth friendly health policies in Scotland, which provides suggestions to inform decision-makers on creating and developing youth-friendly health policies and services in their own countries and internationally.

The ILO Reports on a Bleak Future for the Young Labour Market

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has recently launched a flagship report that attempts to deal with issues surrounding job recovery in times of constrained public finances, the global social climate, rebalancing global growth and reforming finance for more and better jobs. Importantly, the report highlights that young men and women have been disproportionately affected since the onset of the crisis.

Eurobarometer Shows Mixed Picture of Youth Mental Health

In a recent Eurobarometer report, the European Commission reports that in the 12 months preceding the survey, 15% of respondents across EU Member States sought professional help for psychological or emotional problems and 7% took antidepressants, mostly for depression or anxiety. Importantly, the report, which was released on World Mental Health Day, states that those with a more positive experience of life are between the ages of 15 and 24.

Green Talent Needed for Green Jobs!

The European Commission has presented the findings of a joint project between the EU and China in the framework of the New Skills for New Jobs initiative, which discusses the crisis and its impact on vulnerable groups. The New Skills for New Jobs initiative aims to tackle the impact on the European labour markets of the economic crisis and structural factors such as globalisation, technological changes, ageing populations and the shift to a low-carbon economy.

Youth on the Move - is on the Move!

Through a range of activities in Budapest on 9th and 10th October 2010, the European Commission brought an informative show on its flagship initiative to over 3,000 young people in the Hungarian capital. The event consisted of a multitude of simultaneous debates in various spaces, as well as live musical and cultural performances from local youth groups.

2011 – The Year for Europe and China's Youth

The 6th October saw the signing of the joint action plan for the next year's Europe-China Year of Youth. The action plan, which was jointly signed by Commissioner Vassiliou, on behalf of the European Commission and Mr Lu Yongzheng, on behalf of the All China Youth Federation, sets a general framework for the development of joint activities for the Europe-China Year of Youth.
